Areas highlighted for further evaluation

These areas are starting points for hospital-specific evaluation. Suitability, availability, evidence, and expected outcomes must be confirmed for each patient.

CAR-T cell therapyThe world’s largest approved portfolio

  • By mid-2026, China’s NMPA had approved nine CAR-T products, compared with seven in the United States and six in Europe.
  • In June 2026, the NMPA approved satri-cel (satricabtagene autoleucel), the world’s first approved CAR-T therapy for a solid tumor, for advanced gastric cancer.
  • Clinical remission rates exceed 80% in hematologic cancers, with long-term remission and even functional cure possible. Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai was among the world’s first commercial CAR-T centers in 2017.

Cardiovascular surgery & interventionThe world’s largest procedural volume

  • China completes more than one million PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) procedures each year, the largest procedural volume in the world.
  • China’s annual CABG volume ranks among the world’s highest, and Peking University Third Hospital’s robot-assisted total-arterial CABG has attracted international attention.
  • The PAN Procedure uses ultrasound guidance for cardiac intervention without an incision, radiation, or contrast media. It has treated more than 200,000 patients worldwide and has enabled treatment for older adults, pregnant women, cancer patients, and others traditionally considered ineligible.

Proton & heavy-ion radiotherapyOne of the few countries with end-to-end technology

  • China-developed synchrotron technology uses a compact-ring design that allows the equipment to be installed directly in hospitals, without requiring patients to transfer between institutions.
  • A network of proton and heavy-ion centers has been established in Shanghai, Beijing, Lanzhou, Shandong, Guangdong, and other regions.
  • China is one of the few countries with end-to-end capabilities spanning research and development through clinical application.

Innovative oncology drugs & immunotherapyAbout one-third of the global pipeline

  • China accounts for approximately one-third of the innovative medicines in development worldwide.
  • In 2025, the total value of China’s overseas licensing agreements for innovative medicines exceeded US$130 billion.
  • PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, targeted therapies, and genomic-testing-guided precision medicine form an established system. Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center are among the institutions at the global forefront.

Joint replacementWorld-leading volume and strong value

  • In 2025, China performed more than 1.246 million hip and knee replacement procedures.
  • Beijing Jishuitan Hospital performs more than 10,000 joint replacements annually, ranking among the world’s highest-volume centers.
  • U.S. orthopedic surgeons perform about 65 joint replacements per year on average, while leading specialists at Chinese tertiary hospitals perform 200–500. This high procedural volume supports more refined techniques and lower complication rates.

Dental implantsGlobally competitive value and same-day care

  • China places more than four million dental implants each year, and its large case volume supports mature clinical experience and efficient workflows.
  • Digital workflows combine CBCT 3D imaging, computer-guided implant placement, and CAD/CAM crowns that can be produced within 24–48 hours.
  • Immediate implant placement and same-day temporary teeth enable patients to “walk in toothless, walk out with fixed teeth.”

Full-body health screeningLower cost and efficient one-stop screening

  • For comparable equipment and test items, screening programs can cost less than in North America.
  • Centralized one-stop programs can reduce waiting, repeat referrals, and repeat appointments, with most items completed in the same area within one day.
  • Packages can cover multiple tumor markers, multi-site ultrasound, low-dose chest CT, echocardiography, bone density, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy, with options such as brain MRI or coronary CT added when needed.

Aesthetic and reconstructive surgeryShorter booking cycles and extensive revision experience

  • Costs can be lower than in Europe and North America, with shorter appointment lead times.
  • China’s large aesthetic-medicine market gives many physicians substantial experience with complex revision procedures, including revision rhinoplasty, revision eyelid surgery, and removal of injected foreign material.
  • High revision-case volumes can support experience in preserving natural proportions and individual facial characteristics, especially for Asian patients.

Traditional Chinese medicine therapiesEstablished traditions and combinable therapies

  • Established schools of practice have been passed down with a substantial base of hands-on cases.
  • One institution may combine acupuncture, tuina, moxibustion, cupping, and gua sha according to the individual’s condition.
  • Relevant experience includes overuse injuries, chronic pain, lumbar-disc problems associated with prolonged sitting, stiff neck, fascial tension, and postoperative soft-tissue stiffness.
